There are some pretty cool food trends that have just come to market
Suavva: Cacao Smoothie
One of the most exciting products I checked out at the event was Suavva: raw cacao pulp juice. First of all they some some really excellent flavors like Chocolatey Cheer (which was my favorite)! Suavva is very innovating in the using the pulp of the cacao plant, something that has only been used in small native cultures. There is a very short time for year to exact the pulp. These drinks taste much like smoothies but with many health benefits. Like antioxidants such as Theobromine. Theobromine is pretty awesome because it is found to give people more energy as it carries more oxygen to your brain and heart. See the video above for more insight.
Are Yams and Sweet Potatoes the same thing?
One of the best things about coming to these events is all the info I learn. I have been trying for years to figure out the yams vs. sweet potatoes dilemma. When you read recipes many times it calls for sweet potatoes what they really mean is Yams. but Is a Yam a Sweet Potatoes? YES! Yams are the dark orange variety of the sweet potatoes that is usually the easiest one to buy. But there is also a sweet potatoes that looks a lot like a normal potato but it tastes sweeter but nothing like a yam. Yams are amazing. Why this is confusing is that normally in the US when we talk about a different variety of a vegetable we describe it all a Green Tomato or Heirloom Tomato or Butternut Squash or Spaghetti Squash, you never hear someone say Yam sweet Potato, but alas that would be easier to identify. So here I am finally learning difference of sweet potato and yams, so in the future I would suggest assuming that when a recipe calls for sweet potatoes they are referring to Yams.
Yams are sweet potatoes!
When your gluten free it can be kind of depressing to travel especially when you are a foodie like me! I firmly believe in taking yourself on some gluten free foodie vacations and Boulder is one of those spots.
Boulder has changed and grown a lot over the years and it is especially beautiful in the fall!
Here are just a few of my favorite spots in town for you to check out.
1) Fresh Thymes
This place is a "I think I died and went to heaven" gluten free oasis. EVERYTHING is gluten free here, like everything! My sister (who is also celiac) and I couldn't stop going here while we were in town. It has loads of vegan dishes and other non-vegan stuff too if that's your fancy. Plus desserts that are delicious!
Every thing we had on the menu kicked-ass but we especially went crazy for the Pumpkin Bisque, Arugula Mushroom Vegan Almond Ricotta Pizza, and the Mac Attack which is the Vegan Mac N Cheeze with Pesto and Caramelized Onions!!
2) Jaipur Indian
This place is located just off pearl st so it is really convenient. I wouldn't say this is the best Indian food I have ever had but it is still tasty non the less. Yes lots of vegan options too!
3) "The Buff"
This is a good breakfast spot you can get gluten free dairy free pancakes and lots of other gluten free breakfast options on the menu. It has a bit of a log cabin that a college kid would live in feel (it is boulder none the less).
4) Dushanbe Tea House
"Completely build by hand without the use of any power tools, the Teahouse was constructed in Dushanbe, Tajikistan as a gift to their sister city," Then is was reconstructed in Boulder, the ambiance of this place is excellent, you can sit on cushions on high benches or at normal tables. You can hang here for hours if you like and guzzle just about every variety of tea you can imagine. I only had tea here, so not exactly sure what the menu is like but they do serve food too.
5) Celestial Seasonings Tea Tour...I know its not a restaurant but this Tea Tour is of the factory and it is awesome and the smells Oh the smells are amazing in this place. Plus they have baked gluten free treats, I didn't try any but I thought it was awesome that they offered them in the tea shop. Plus the tour is free.
This stuff really should be called Magic Potion. OMG this is the beverage of my dreams. They are a local company and so far only sell this stuff in Boulder (trust me I am begging them to sell it other places!). The coolest thing about these drinks isn't just that they have great combo's but that they have Flower Essences in them! I have been a Flower Essence therapist for 13 years and have been waiting for someone to add them to beverages, and finally someone has. You can buy these potions at Fresh Thymes in Boulder.
And if you wanna delve deeper into more gluten free options in Boulder I highly recommend this site (www.glutenfreeboulder.com) I used it as a reference while I was there
